My Powerhouse Morning

Daily writing prompt
What are your morning rituals? What does the first hour of your day look like?

The first hour of my day is the most important.

It’s a non-negotiable that I get out of bed before anyone else in my house so I can savor those sweet, silent moments before the day really gets going. Fourteen years of marriage and twelve years of motherhood have taught me a lot, but one thing is certain: my day only works if I start here:

Caffeine: Obvious? A quick scoop of pre-workout (this one) is easy on my morning brain. I can quickly mix the powder with water and add a few ice cubes and I’m good to go. No waiting for coffee to brew (that’s for later).

Treadmill Walk: I take my freshly mixed pre-workout and head straight for my treadmill (and currently on this step as I type at 6:40am!) I sip on my delightful little cup of strawberry lemonade goodness while I walk on a very slow 2.5 speed. I swear when I added this to my routine it was very obvious how much it helps my brain and body get warmed up after a full night of sleep. I keep the lights low while I scroll, check in on my blog, or make a plan for the day ahead.

30 Minute Workout: I have the benefit of having a workout buddy – a good friend calls me on FaceTime most mornings and we pick a 30 minute home workout to do from this platform. We typically will choose a Barre or Pilates workout because very little equipment is needed, but the results are very obvious. I LOVE pushing my body to its limits using its own weight only, there is something incredibly powerful feeling about that!

Depending on the length of my treadmill walk, that could be the end of my first hour of my day. Sometimes I walk for 15 minutes, sometimes I walk for an hour. It all depends on what’s happening the rest of the day or how much sleep I had the night before. I prioritize sleep and rest because if my body is tired, I know I can’t perform at my best.

After a workout I have breakfast. Sometimes I wake up hungry so I will have a little oatmeal before my workout, if not I’ll have it post workout with a strawberry smoothie made with vanilla protein powder. If I feel like cooking more or it was a tougher workout that morning, I’ll cook some tofu and breakfast potatoes + spinach to refuel.

I’ve been doing this for 5+ years and look forward to it every morning! For clarity, a workout could also look like a 30 minute foam rolling, restorative yoga, or mobility/flexibility class. PLUS I take ballet class twice a week AND love to golf, so I need to make sure my body is warmed up for any activity I have that day! I take care of myself so I can do everything I want to do for as long as I possibly can!

Walking on 2.5 speed, sipping pre-workout, listening to a podcast, about to open my laptop that sits on my make shift treadmill desk that’s actually just a long canvas art print from a set of 5 🙃
