Pilates For Adult Ballet

I wish I would’ve known about this way back in the beginning.

I’m talking way back, like, when I started training for bodybuilding competitions close to ten years ago. Or even further back in high school when I was actually taking Pilates classes (a friends’ mom was the instructor), but at the time I had no idea what I was doing or why. The class was right before the hip-hop dance class I really was there to take, but since everyone else in the classes (other high school girls) were taking both, I felt like I had to take both too 🤷‍♀️ I’m thankful for that period of time now!

I’m not talking machines and circus moves Pilates, I’m talking about OG – classical – good old fashioned – mat Pilates. (no shade towards the new stuff, I’m just obsessed with the old stuff)

I recently performed in my first ballet recital, and when I watch the video back I, of course pick myself apart, but also, I can see my mat work in my performance 🥹

I can feel it working in class and practice, but to see the full video knowing I felt great during the dance itself (even if I’d make a few tweaks if I could go back in time lol) to see the hard work I put in outside of ballet class, strengthening the core and focusing on elongation, shows up in a lovely way on stage! There’s one chance to get it right when stage time finally comes, so I think having the support from my core is not only helpful, but a non-negotiable!

This isn’t just a “core workout,” it’s a very specific set of moves, performed in a certain order, that helps improve strength and flexibility of the entire body while developing mind and body alignment. I often hear, and have even said it myself, “Pilates and Yoga are basically the same.” From the outside, similar, but Yoga is definitely more of a spiritual connection with yourself, where Pilates is more about your breath with the work, not necessarily the deep connection with your higher self. I mean we’re always connecting to our higher self, but do you get what I’m saying here?

Yoga = Meditative. Pilates = Intentional Workout.

As I continue to learn about how Pilates is working in my ballet practice (at age 37), I want to share what I learn in a way that will help you in your ballet practice and beyond! What should that look like?

I can’t wait to see what we’ll build together! See ya in the next post ❤️🩷 -KT
